Living Book at Interactive Museum

The Living Book is an interactive media installation combining book, film, 3D animations and sound. As the book’s pages are turned, films are accurately projected onto the surface of the printed pages. The user is thus able to control the content of the book and the user’s senses of sight, touch, hearing and smell are all addressed through this interactive kiosk.

The Living Book is presented in a similar style to a lectern and is designed to make it ergonomically easy for the audience to skim through the book’s pages. Users can retrieve more information through touch commands. The book is attached to a reading desk and as soon as it is opened or a page is turned over, a control unit scans the actual page. Thus the software directly activates a film which is accurately projected onto the double page.

The printed contents, film and audio combine to bring the book to life for the reader, in their choice of language. A sensory stimulus can also be integrated with film sequences to strengthen the multi-sensory perception of the book.

The technology itself remains hidden from the user as the feel of the pages and how the pages are turned remains the same: the book exists in its original form but is augmented through projection of film, 3D animations and sound.

The Living Book has been installed also at the Kunstsammlungen und Museen Augsburg Maximilianmuseum.

“The Living Book as an unusual information medium brings our customers the desired amount in attraction and infotainment – at trade fairs, in companies and museums,” says Ilja Sallacz, designer and co-owner of Liquid.

About Liquid: The Augsburg based design agency Liquid | Agentur für Gestaltung featured in the Annual Media 2010 awards with the Living Book of Roma Rolladensysteme as well as The Living Book of Papierfabrik Louisenthal.
