Touch Test
STD kits ordered via kiosk
Kiosks in L.A. County are helping to diagnose sexually transmitted diseases.
Health officials in the US are using kiosks and tablet technology to allow patients to order home STD testing kits, which they receive on the spot instead of waiting for them to arrive by post.
The Los Angeles "I Know" program, now in it’s 3rd year, not only delivers the kits to the user instantly, but also records kit orders, so patients can later obtain their results from the program website, or by calling a toll-free number.
Visitors sign up for a home-testing kit, entering their information and ticking a privacy disclaimer. The kiosk then prints out a mailing label and form, which the user takes to a pharmacy or pick-up location to obtain the kit. After using the test, the printed label from the kiosk is applied to the vial and then posted for processing.
The kiosks used in the STD program are manufactured by SeePoint Interactive Kiosks, and are designed to work with two printers – a thermal printer from US Microproducts and a label printer from Zebra.
The entire project was completed in under six weeks with the company’s Off The Shelf design program. They have overhead signage and are silk screened to carry the “I Know” brand.
With STDs increasing, particularly among young African-American women in the US, it is hoped that the kiosks will encourage patients to take advantage of the privacy, ease and simplicity of the process to empower them to screen for health problems.”
The "I Know" program received over 30,000 website enquiries in its first year; with almost 3,000 kits ordered. Out of these, just over half were returned and tested, with 8.5% found positive for chlamydia or gonorrhea, the two most reported STD’s in the USA.
