Tesco Trials Wine Kiosk
Tesco is trialling a Virtual Wine Advisor in six stores across the UK which, if it proves popular, will be rolled out to 150 Tesco stores later this year. The kiosk acts as an electronic sommelier, offering customers advice on which bottle of wine to buy. The touchscreen is located in the wine aisle, where customers can get information on which wine would best accompany a meal they are planning.
Customers can search for wine by country, colour, style as well as price, as well as scan the bar code of a specific bottle to get further information on that product. They can also print off this information to take home with them.
Andrew Gale, Tesco BWS Category Technical Manager, comments, “We know our customers are really interested in exploring new types of wine, but they want to make sure they’re getting a wine that will suit them, at the right price. The Virtual Wine Advisor is an exciting new piece of technology that takes the guesswork out of choosing wine and will give customers the confidence to try out wines they wouldn’t normally choose.”
This kiosk, which is part of Retec Interfaces' portfolio of guided selling solutions, gives customers the information they need to make their purchase. It is aimed at increasing sales and making a positive impact on the retailer’s bottom line but also helping the customer to enjoy and gain knowledge of wine with a reduced dependency on store staff. The kiosk both increases sales in the wine department and guides customers to make informed purchasing decisions.
