Star Micronics printer TSP800

Star Micronics TSP800 printer.

As kiosks become an increasingly cost effective solution, their presence within the retail sector is becoming far more widespread. In response, printer manufacturers such as Star Micronics have developed a range of printers to accommodate an ever-expanding variety of applications. With features such as a scalable raster driver available on both open frame and packaged kiosk printers developed by Star, A4 content can be reduced to virtual A6 with exact precision.

Whether using standard 80mm wide paper or 112mm wide paper, the documents created will be printed exactly as they are displayed. This makes them suitable for printing from applications that are designed for A4 printers, such as Internet output. By replacing an A4 laser printer, significant cost savings can be realised in terms of hardware, as well as environmental benefits through reduced CO2 emissions and reduced power consumption.

By using the TSP800 packaged printer or the TUP992 open frame printer in a kiosk, the retailer benefits from web printing services by automatically scaling A4 images onto 112mm wide paper, without having to install an expensive and complex laser printer with its associated consumable costs. Beyond these costs savings, and considering the environmental benefits in greater detail, the TSP800 uses an estimated 18% of the power consumed by a typical A4 laser printer when printing and emits an estimated 18% of the CO2 emissions from a typical laser printer per annum. Furthermore, there is no requirement for third party software controls to enable scaled printing and with a first-page-out time of less than one second – compared to an average of 22 seconds for a typical laser printer – speed is certainly not compromised.
