Four quick questions to Brendan O’Meara, Microsoft Windows Embedded

Brendan O'Meara

KIOSK EUROPE: What is Microsoft’s strategy when it comes to self-service software in retail?

BRENDAN O’MEARA: Windows Embedded is committed to providing the next generation of software and services to equip original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with the tools to develop interactive, user-friendly kiosks for retailers. We offer a wide range of operating systems specifically designed for use in interactive kiosks. We recently announced the community technology preview (CTP) of the Windows Embedded POSReady 7 platform, designed to help support the powerful, immersive, high-definition experiences customers have come to expect.

KE: Are the shifts towards interactivity and self-service in retail driven more by technological advancement or consumer demand?

BO’M: When evaluating the retail market and how it’s been affected by technology, it’s important to take a look at the habits of consumers and how they’re interacting with technology on a daily basis. Smartphones, gaming systems or tablet devices reflect the interactivity consumers have become accustomed to when dealing with information. Consumers now have a very active role in defining how they want to view information. The shift towards interactivity and self-service in the retail market is fuelled by consumers wanting to interact with a kiosk in a manner that reflects the other devices they use on a daily basis.

KE: Are retailers fully exploiting the potential of interactive and self-service technology, or is there still a need to spread awareness among retailers?

BO’M: In the past decade years the Windows Embedded team has seen a greater adoption of interactive technology in retail settings. More recently we’ve seen an even greater push across various vertical markets for the use of kiosks and digital signage that incorporate user friendly interfaces. For example Höft & Wessel has created an airport kiosk – built on Windows Embedded Standard 7 – that helps to simplify the airport experience for travellers. As embedded technology evolves, more retailers will look to invest in cutting edge technology with the full potential to satisfy customer needs.

KE: How has the market been developing in recent years and where does Microsoft see it going in the future?

BO’M: The world is definitely becoming more connected and interactive. Retail customers want that same experience in all aspects of their lives, including their shopping experience. OEMs will also increasingly equip retailers with ways to collect and analyse data from their kiosks. By understanding who is actually using kiosks and self-service devices both OEMs and retailers alike can then create and implement devices that incorporate features that enhance consumers’ overall in-store experiences.

Usability Workshop @ KEX 2012

Handspiel
What can self-service terminals learn from the success of the iPad? The Usability Expert Workshop will explore ways of developing self-service solutions capable of inspiring the same fanatical reaction as Apple’s iconic product. On the 7th of March this year, hundreds of people were out on the streets, waiting to be amongst the first to get their hands on the latest iPad iteration. They had camped out all night with their thermoses in the freezing cold. Why are so many people willing to do this in front of every Apple store, but not for a new check-in terminal at the airport, train station, or shopping mall? What’s behind the buzz, and how can we encourage a similar reaction to self-service solutions? Through expert contributions and together with you, we will seek to answer these questions and explore future ways to get there. KIOSK EUROPE and Handspiel will present the Usability Expert Workshop as part of KIOSK EUROPE EXPO 2012, which runs from 12-13 June. The Usability Workshop will take place on Wednesday, 13th June from 10:30-13:30. Numbers are limited, so secure your place now by booking online at www.kioskeurope-expo.com
