Buses are a popular form of transport for commuters in London. The new LED lighting for the 1,100 ticket terminals of London Bus shows that there still is plenty of scope for enhanced sustainability.

Over 7 million people commute into the city every morning, often on buses and the underground. Transport for London aims to ensure smooth operations, as well as ecological sustainability, economy and efficiency. Even seemingly small efficiency improvements can add up to great savings in carbon emissions.

Almex have developed LED lighting for ticketing kiosks at London's bus stops, which create brighter displays and are easier to read than traditional fluorescent devices. Because an LED only use 0.8 watts of electricity, compared to 32 watts for traditional displays, there are significant energy savings to be made. 75% energy savings can be made through the deployment of LED screens, which amounts to 170 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.

Previously, some 33 of the kiosks in London did not even have lighting because they were battery-operated and there was not sufficient power supply for lighting. Now, over 1,100 ticketing kiosks in London have Höft & Wessel's LED lighting system.
