A new tradeshow dedicated to mobile interactivity for business has been announced. apptec EXPO 2012 is the first trade show exclusively dedicated to apps, app-technologies, solutions and integration for the business sector. The show will be held from 12th to 13th June 2012 in Berlin, Germany. Over 3000 international trade show visitors and 150 specialist suppliers are expected to attend.
 
The use of mobile applications, known as ‘apps’, has exploded amongst consumers. Apps are small software programs that can be downloaded to smartphones. They are used to personalise and extend the performance of mobile devices.
 
Many companies are making use of this trend by offering free apps to their customers. Most of these apps do not reach beyond the scope of customer communication. However, companies have just recently started to develop apps for internal use. These new developments open up business opportunities and potential savings for forward-thinking businesses.
 
For Example:
 
Train Conductors today typically carry a mobile computer, enabling them to sell tickets and accept card payments. The hardware and software is purpose made with considerable effort. The low production numbers involved result in comparatively high costs.
 
In contrast, widely available smartphones can be used with a plug-in module that turns them into card payment acceptors. Journey enquiries and ticket sales are processed through the app on the phone and a paper receipt is printed from a mobile printer attached to the operator’s belt, which communicates wirelessly with the app. Because of much higher manufacturing numbers, the cost per unit is significantly lower than a bespoke solution. Furthermore, new functionalities are realised through software updates rather than hardware engineering. This results in capital expenditure savings and higher flexibility.
